Description
This vintage silver and enamel garland brooch is hallmarked for Birmingham 1946 and was made by A.H. Darby & Son. The circular wreath design features vivid blue enamel flowers with yellow centres, framed by bright green enamel leaves in sterling silver. As a mid-century silver enamel brooch, it offers both decorative impact and historical interest. Dated just after the Second World War, it reflects the renewed optimism of British jewellery design in the late 1940s.
Design & Craftsmanship
The eye catching brooch forms a complete floral garland, arranged as a balanced open circle. Each flower is individually defined, with petal detailing picked out beneath translucent blue enamel. The leaves show fine vein engraving, which adds texture beneath the green enamel. The silver mount provides contrast and structure, while the scalloped outer edge softens the outline. On the reverse, the piece carries clear Birmingham hallmarks for 1946 along with the maker’s mark for A.H. Darby & Son. The traditional pin and rollover clasp remain securely fitted.
Why We Love This Brooch
This is a confident, well-made example of post-war British silver. The enamel remains bright and expressive, which speaks to its quality. At the same time, the wreath format makes it easy to wear. It has presence without feeling oversized. Because it is fully hallmarked and dated, it also offers certainty for collectors.
Styling Ideas
This vintage silver and enamel garland brooch suits someone who enjoys vintage colour but prefers structured design. It works well on a coat lapel, knitwear, or a simple dress. In addition, the circular wreath shape makes it ideal for winter styling, especially over darker fabrics where the enamel can stand out. It would also make a thoughtful gift for someone born in 1946 or for a lover of mid-century British silver.
