Description

A string of antique Bakelite beads, likely dating to circa 1930s to 1940s, featuring a long graduated strand in a rich plum shade. Measuring approximately 34 inches, it slips easily over the head and creates a strong statement when worn. Each oval bead is individually knotted on dark string, which improves spacing and helps protect the strand.

Design & Craftsmanship

The necklace uses graduated oval Bakelite beads, with smaller examples towards the back and larger beads forming the centre. Their smooth polished surfaces give the deep plum colour a warm finish. The colour and lustre can resemble dark cherry amber, although this necklace is Bakelite rather than natural amber. Bakelite was historically used to create amber-like jewellery, and well-preserved examples remain collectible in their own right. Meanwhile, the hand-tied knots create a flexible drape and separate each bead securely.

Why We Love These Beads

This beaded necklace has a strong vintage presence without requiring complicated styling. The 34-inch length sits comfortably over clothing, while the graduated beads create a clear focal point. Although the rich translucent-looking colour may recall amber, Bakelite has its own design history and collector appeal. Therefore, it should be appreciated as a desirable period material rather than simply as an amber substitute.

How to Style

These antique Bakelite beads suit someone who appreciates vintage costume jewellery, bold proportions and historically significant materials. It works particularly well over plain dresses, shirts, knitwear and simple necklines.  The generous length makes it easy to wear with both casual and evening clothing. The plum shade pairs naturally with black, cream, navy, grey and warm autumnal colours.
