Antique 9ct Gold Propelling Pencil

Description

This antique gold pencil is stamped 9ct and dates to the late Victorian to Edwardian period, circa 1895–1915. Crafted as a functional writing instrument, it features a finely engraved hexagonal shaft with decorative collars and a garnet-set terminal. As an antique 9ct gold propelling pencil, it combines mechanical ingenuity with detailed period ornament. The top section unscrews to allow the insertion of replacement leads, making it both collectible and fully usable today.

Design & Craftsmanship

The hexagonal body displays engraved foliate panels that catch the light and prevent the pencil from rolling. Decorative collars frame the shaft and add structural definition near the mechanism. The garnet terminal provides a refined finishing detail typical of late Victorian and Edwardian personal accessories. Internally, the pencil operates via a reservoir mechanism. When the top is unscrewed, slim graphite leads can be placed into the hollow barrel. Once reassembled, twisting the mechanism advances the lead through the tip using an internal clutch system. This type of engineering was widely used in quality propelling pencils of the period.

Why We Love This

This collector’s piece offers genuine practicality alongside decorative appeal. Because it remains mechanically functional, it is more than a display object. The engraving gives it personality without excess weight. At the same time, the gold construction provides intrinsic value. It suits someone who appreciates traditional craftsmanship and mechanical detail.

Styling Ideas

This antique gold pencil fits neatly into a waistcoat or jacket pocket and also displays beautifully on a desk. It would make a perfect gift for a writer, historian, or professional who values authentic late Victorian to Edwardian accessories. The scale keeps it discreet, yet the engraved finish ensures it stands out on closer inspection.

  • ERA/HALLMARK: Victorian era. Stamped 9ct.
