Description

Jet is a gemstone made from the fossilised wood from a Monkey Puzzle Tree which has washed up on the beaches of Whitby. This coal like substance is said to be approximately 182 million years old! Archaeologists have found examples of jet throughout history but it was the Victorians who gave jet the commercial popularity as we know it today. A piece of jet was a must have to take home as a souvenir from Whitby, but its popularity soured when Queen Victoria began wearing it in remembrance of her husband Albert after his death in 1861.

This is a beautiful hand carved Whitby Jet choker, which sits very neatly against the neck. It is made up of jet panels strung together on thread, and knotted in between. The knots next to the clasp are not as neat as the others. The choker fastens together with a box clasp. This is a classic and timeless piece, a great addition to any antique jewellery lover’s collection.
