How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home: Easy Guide to Ring Sizing and Common Questions Answered
Jess2025-09-27T14:36:04+00:00Finding your perfect ring size can feel confusing, but it doesn’t need to be. Whether you’re choosing an engagement ring, treating yourself to a vintage statement ring, or buying a special gift, getting the fit right is essential. In this guide, we’ll show you how to measure your ring size at home, explain the difference between UK and US sizing, and answer the most common ring sizing questions.
Of course if you’re local to Leeds you can always pop into the shop and we’ll accurately measure your finger for you.
📏 Two Simple Ways to Measure Your Ring Size
1. String or Paper Method
Wrap a strip of paper or string around the base of your finger.
Mark where it overlaps.
Measure the length in millimetres — this is your finger’s circumference.
Compare your measurement with a ring size chart.
2. Existing Ring Method
Take a ring that already fits the intended finger.
Measure the internal diameter in millimetres.
Multiply by π (3.14) to find the circumference, or match it directly to a sizing chart.
🖐️ Tips for Accurate Sizing
Measure at the end of the day — your fingers are naturally larger.
Warm hands only — cold fingers shrink, which can give you the wrong size.
Between sizes? Choose the next half size up for comfort.
Consider the band — wider rings feel tighter, so you may need to size up.

UK vs US Ring Sizes
In the UK, ring sizes are measured in letters (G, H, I, J, etc., including half sizes). In the US, they’re measured in numbers (for example, UK size N = US size 7). If you’re shopping internationally, always check a conversion chart like the one below.

Common Ring Sizing Questions
Can my ring size change over time?
Yes weight changes, temperature, and even pregnancy can affect your finger size. Once a ring has been resized there’s nothing stopping it from being resized again to fit you.
What if I’m buying a ring as a surprise gift?
Borrow one of their rings and measure it, or ask friends/family if they know the size. You can always purchase the ring and we’ll resize it at a later date.
Can all rings be resized?
Most gold, platinum, and silver rings can be resized by a jeweller, though designs with stones all around the band (like eternity rings) may be more difficult. We have noted on each ring listing whether resizing is possible.
How much does it cost to resize a ring?
It depends on the metal of the ring and the amount of sizes. For example a silver ring would cost less than a gold or platinum ring. We have implemented a new system online where you can see the individual cost of each ring sizing, and we’re trying to update each ring listing at the time of writing this blog. If the ring you’re interested in does not have this information on the listing yet, please email us for an accurate quote.
How long does it take to resize a ring?
Turnaround is usually around one week, though it can vary depending on the workshop’s workload and the complexity of the ring.
Does resizing harm a ring?
When done professionally, resizing does not harm the ring. A skilled jeweller will ensure the integrity of the metal and gemstones remains intact.
Can I return or refund a ring once it’s been resized?
Unfortunately, no. Once a ring has been resized, it is considered a customised piece and is non-refundable.
