Description

This 1940s cultured pearl necklace combines a graduated strand of creamy cultured pearls with an ornate 9ct yellow gold and pearl clasp. The necklace has a classic mid-century feel, while the decorative clasp adds considerably more character than a standard pearl fastening.

Design & Craftsmanship

The vintage necklace features individually knotted cultured pearls arranged in a graduated strand, with the largest pearls positioned towards the centre. Their soft cream colouring and gentle lustre give the necklace a balanced, traditional appearance. Meanwhile, the clasp is particularly decorative. It takes the form of an openwork floral or sunburst design in 9ct yellow gold, set with a circle of smaller pearls around a raised central gold detail. The fastening uses a long tongue and box-style clasp mechanism, which integrates neatly into the decorative centrepiece.

Why We Love This Necklace

The clasp gives this necklace much of its individuality. Rather than serving only as a fastening, it acts as an ornamental feature in its own right. Therefore, the necklace has more visual interest than a conventional single strand of pearls. The graduated cultured pearls also retain a timeless quality, making this a piece that can remain wearable well beyond changing trends.

How to Style

This 1940s cultured pearl necklace suits someone who appreciates traditional pearl jewellery but prefers a stronger vintage identity. It works naturally with occasion wear, bridal wear and evening dressing. However, it also pairs well with a blouse, tailored jacket or simple knitwear. Because the clasp is so decorative, it can be worn conventionally at the back or turned slightly towards the side or front to make the gold and pearl detail more visible.
