Description

This Victorian opal ring dates to 1864 and carries a clear Birmingham hallmark. Crafted in 15ct yellow gold, it combines opals, emeralds, pearls and amethysts in an ornate antique cluster. The arrangement creates a richly detailed dress ring with strong period character, while the engraved shoulders add further decorative interest.

Design & Craftsmanship

The antique opal ring centres on a compact oval cluster formed from two opals, two pearls, two emeralds and smaller amethyst accents. Each gemstone is set closely into the gold, creating a balanced arrangement of colour and texture. The opals show soft flashes of green and pink, while the emeralds and amethysts introduce deeper contrasting tones. Meanwhile, the pearls soften the composition with their natural lustre. The shoulders are hand engraved with scrolling foliate decoration, which continues the detailed Victorian treatment around the band.

Why We Love This Ring

This ring has the kind of complexity that makes Victorian jewellery so distinctive. The mix of gemstones gives it character without feeling overly formal, while the 15ct gold construction provides substance and warmth. Because the hallmark dates it clearly to 1864, the ring also carries a precise historical context rather than a broad period attribution. Its detailed engraving and mixed-gem arrangement make it especially appealing to collectors who value individuality and original antique craftsmanship.

How to Style

This Victorian opal ring suits someone drawn to colourful antique jewellery and unusual gemstone combinations. It works well as a statement ring, collector’s piece or distinctive everyday ring for careful wear. The low, compact cluster keeps it wearable, while the engraved shoulders give interest from every angle. It would particularly appeal to a buyer who prefers characterful Victorian jewellery over more conventional single-stone designs.
