Description

A late Victorian gold serpent brooch, dating to approximately 1880 to 1900. This Victorian emerald and diamond brooch features two interlocking circular forms, including a textured serpent-inspired element. A vivid round emerald, sits alongside an old-cut diamond, creating a compact and distinctive design. The brooch weighs over 10g, giving it a reassuringly substantial feel.

Why We Love This Brooch

This late nineteenth century pin has the substance and individuality that make Victorian jewellery so appealing. The asymmetric arrangement feels distinctive without becoming difficult to wear, while the emerald green and old-cut diamond provide restrained colour and sparkle. We also like the considerable weight and solid construction, which give the brooch a quality often missing from later lightweight examples.

Its subtle serpent influence adds another layer of period character without dominating the design. Serpents became especially significant in Victorian jewellery after Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a serpent engagement ring in 1839. During the period, the motif came to symbolise eternal love, wisdom and continuity, so it appeared frequently in rings, brooches and bracelets. Here, the scale-like texture gives the design a clear serpent influence without making the motif overly literal.

How to Style

This Victorian gold serpent brooch suits someone who prefers unusual antique jewellery rather than highly formal pieces. It works particularly well on a jacket lapel, knitwear, scarf or structured dress. At the same time, its circular form makes it easy to combine with both antique and contemporary jewellery. It would especially appeal to a collector of Victorian serpent jewellery and antique or distinctive gold brooches.
