Description

This antique Marius Hammer silver bracelet dates to the late 19th or early 20th century, most likely circa 1900 to 1920. Crafted in Norwegian 930-grade silver, it features pale turquoise enamel panels with traditional filigree decoration. The bracelet carries the 930S silver mark together with Marius Hammer’s distinctive maker’s mark. Hammer established his Bergen workshop in 1871 and became particularly known for fine Norwegian enamel and filigree jewellery. His firm continued after his retirement in 1915 and remained active until 1930.

Design & Craftsmanship

The 1920s bracelet uses a series of articulated silver panels, each combining translucent pale blue enamel with intricate coiled filigree motifs. Fine radiating lines beneath the enamel create a softly textured effect, while the darker oxidised silver details give the design definition.  The articulated construction allows the bracelet to curve naturally around the wrist, while the concealed fastening and attached safety chain provide additional security.

Why We Love This Bracelet

Marius Hammer jewellery offers a particularly distinctive combination of Scandinavian design and traditional metalworking. This bracelet has strong visual character, yet the narrow proportions keep it very wearable. Meanwhile, the original enamel and detailed silverwork give it the individuality collectors look for in antique Norwegian jewellery. The 930S standard is also slightly higher in silver content than sterling silver, which is normally 925 parts per thousand. Hammer and other Norwegian makers used 930 silver for jewellery of this type.

How to Style

This antique Marius Hammer silver bracelet suits someone who appreciates antique Scandinavian jewellery, enamel work or more unusual alternatives to conventional bracelets. Its soft turquoise colour works particularly well with neutral clothing, linen, knitwear and simple evening pieces. However, the relatively slim profile also makes it practical for everyday wear. It can sit alone as a focal bracelet or alongside restrained silver bangles without losing the detail of its enamel panels.
