Description
This vintage David-Andersen butterfly brooch is crafted in sterling silver and decorated with rich yellow enamel. Its broad wings, scrolling antennae and finely detailed surface give the butterfly a particularly decorative finish, while the generous scale makes it an effective statement brooch.
Design & Craftsmanship
The butterfly pin has been carefully modelled with four shaped wings and an articulated-looking central body. Fine linear detailing beneath the translucent yellow enamel recreates the natural structure of butterfly wings. Meanwhile, darker silver outlines define each section and give the design additional depth.
The reverse has a traditional pin and safety catch, while the maker’s marks remain clearly visible. David-Andersen is one of Norway’s best-known jewellery and silversmithing houses. Goldsmith David Andersen founded the company in Christiania, now Oslo, in 1876, and the firm became particularly associated with high-quality Norwegian silver and enamel jewellery. Vintage David-Andersen enamel butterfly brooches are also a recognised part of the company’s 20th-century jewellery output.
Why We Love This Brooch
What stands out here is the combination of strong colour and detailed workmanship. The yellow enamel is bright without feeling overly modern, while the engraved wing pattern gives the piece genuine visual interest at close range.
The butterfly form is immediately recognisable and easy to wear. The signed reverse is another important feature because it identifies the maker clearly rather than relying solely on attribution. For collectors of Scandinavian silver and enamel jewellery, that combination of design, workmanship and maker is especially appealing.
How to Style
This David Andersen butterfly brooch suits someone who enjoys distinctive vintage jewellery, Scandinavian design or nature-inspired pieces. It has enough presence for a jacket or coat lapel, yet it could also be worn on knitwear, a scarf or a structured dress.
The yellow enamel makes it particularly easy to introduce colour into a neutral outfit. However, the traditional butterfly form keeps it versatile rather than overly seasonal. It would also make an interesting gift for a collector of David Andersen jewellery or vintage Norwegian enamel.
