How to Choose an Antique Engagement Ring: A Complete Buying Guide
Jess2026-03-08T17:19:11+00:00Choosing an engagement ring is a meaningful moment and for many couples, vintage and antique engagement rings offer something modern pieces simply can’t: character, craftsmanship, and a sense of history and story.
If you’re starting your search and feeling unsure where to begin, this guide walks you through every step; from finding the right ring to sizing, valuation certificates, wedding bands, and long-term care.
Whether you’re planning a surprise proposal or choosing a ring together, this guide is designed to give you clarity at every stage so you can make a confident, informed decision without second-guessing yourself.
1. Start with the ring not the rules
There’s no single “correct” engagement ring. The right choice comes down to personal style, lifestyle, and what genuinely feels like them.
With antique engagement rings, you also have the joy of choosing from different eras and design traditions; from ornate Victorian settings to clean Art Deco geometry and softer mid-century styles.
When browsing, consider:
Gemstone or diamond — diamonds remain classic, while sapphires, rubies, and opals bring colour and individuality.
Metal choice — yellow gold feels warm and traditional, white gold and platinum look crisp and modern, while rose gold offers softness. What metal do they normally wear and what would suit their skin tone?
Era and design — each period has its own character and craftsmanship.
Lifestyle — low-profile settings suit everyday wear, while higher settings make more of a statement.
If you or your partner works with their hands, prefers minimal jewellery, or already wears rings daily, practicality matters just as much as beauty.
The best antique engagement ring is the one that fits seamlessly into their life.
2. Set the budget- no pressure
Forget outdated spending “rules”. Start with a budget that feels comfortable for you.
Once you have a range in mind, decide what matters most:
Stone size or unique character
Age and history or modern finish
Traditional diamond or coloured gemstone
Antique engagement rings can offer strong value compared to newly made pieces. You’re often paying for craftsmanship and individuality rather than brand mark-ups, mass production or adhering to the rising cost of metals.
However, it’s important to manage expectations. Every budget has limits, and that means prioritising. You may need to compromise on stone size, clarity, colour, or even era. Even with antique rings, you won’t find exceptional size, top clarity, high colour, and rare period craftsmanship all in one piece unless you’re working with a larger budget.
Being realistic doesn’t make the ring less meaningful. It simply helps you focus on the features that will make the greatest visual and emotional impact within your price range.
3. Ring Sizing
Ring sizing often feels like the trickiest part, but it doesn’t have to be.
You can size discreetly before proposing or resize afterwards. Both approaches are completely normal.
Helpful tips:
Borrow a ring they already wear (ideally from the correct finger).
Measure at home using a printable guide or string method. For more information on this, click here.
Remember fingers change size with temperature and time of day.
Most antique and vintage rings can be resized.
If the size isn’t perfect, don’t worry.
Most antique engagement rings can be resized by approximately five sizes either way. The exact amount depends on the design, the setting, and the structure of the band, but in most cases there is flexibility.
We use our experienced jeweller for all resizing work. When carried out correctly, resizing is not detrimental to the integrity or appearance of the ring.
Resizing typically takes around one week.
There is also no time limit for coming back to have your ring resized after purchase. Some clients prefer to propose first and adjust the size later and that’s absolutely fine.
Because antique rings are individually made and often handcrafted, professional assessment matters. We will always advise honestly on what is safe and appropriate for each piece.
The goal is a ring that fits comfortably and securely for everyday wear.
4. Valuation Certificates and Insurance
Valuation certificates are available on request, particularly for higher-value pieces where insurance documentation is required.
We prepare standard valuation certificates in-house, providing a detailed description of the ring and its replacement value for insurance purposes. For many clients, this level of documentation is more than sufficient.
For higher-value rings, such as those with larger diamonds or significant centre stones, we can also arrange certification through a GIA-accredited specialist. These formal reports are generally more appropriate for substantial stones and may involve an additional fee.
Only a small number of our rings already have independent certification in place. If you choose to add a valuation or certificate after purchase, we can organise this for you.
If a ring already comes with certification, we will have the documentation updated into your name so that ownership details are correct.
If you are unsure what level of documentation you need, we’re always happy to advise based on the ring and your insurer’s requirements.
5. Wedding Bands and Future Stacking
It’s worth thinking about wedding bands early, especially when choosing an antique or vintage engagement ring.
Some rings sit neatly alongside a straight wedding band. Others, particularly older designs with raised settings or detailed shoulders, may need a shaped or curved band to fit comfortably. We’ll always guide you on what will work best with your chosen ring.
Many of our customers return to us when it’s time to choose their wedding bands. Trying pieces on together, seeing how they sit, and building a set that feels balanced is part of the process.
Over the years, we often see those same clients again; adding anniversary rings, eternity rings, or meaningful milestone pieces to their stack. That continuity means the world to us.
Antique wedding and eternity rings are particularly special. The detailing, hand-finished settings, and older diamond cuts give them a softness and character that modern bands rarely replicate. They sit beautifully alongside antique engagement rings, creating a stack that feels cohesive rather than manufactured.
6. Aftercare for your antique engagement ring
Antique and vintage engagement rings were made to be worn and they stay beautiful with simple care.
We recommend:
Gentle regular cleaning
Annual professional checks
Stone tightening when needed
Removing your ring for heavy tasks
We provide a one-year guarantee from the date of purchase. During this time, if any issues arise related to workmanship, we will put them right.
After the first year, we are still here to help. We can organise any necessary repairs or maintenance through our experienced jeweller. Depending on the work required, there may be a cost, but we will always discuss this with you beforehand.
Ongoing maintenance is part of owning fine jewellery, especially older pieces. With the right care and occasional professional attention, your ring should continue its story for many years to come.
7. Returns and flexibility
Buying an engagement ring can feel like a big decision, and we understand that timing doesn’t always go exactly to plan.
For in-store purchases, we offer 28 days for credit. If your proposal timeline extends beyond that, speak to us, we’re often able to allow additional time.
For online purchases, we offer a full refund within our returns period, provided the ring is returned in its original condition.
If you’re unsure about sizing, style, or timing, we would always rather discuss it openly than have you feel pressured.
